The 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia announced the list of new sites including the ancient town of Si Thep and its associated Dvaravati monuments to be inscribed as world heritage.

This marks Thailand’s seventh World Heritage Site and the fourth cultural World Heritage Site in Thailand within the past 30 years, following Sukhothai Historical Park, Ayutthaya Historical Park, and the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site.

The significance of the ancient city of Si Thep lies in its role as a center of maritime trade and its archaeological evidence of multiple historical periods, spanning from prehistoric times to the Dvaravati culture, through the Khmer civilization, and into the early Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin eras before its eventual decline.

Notable highlights of this archaeological site include the Khao Klang Nok Stupa, the largest known stupa in Thai art of the Dvaravati period, an enormous limestone mountain called Khao Thamorat, where cave paintings were discovered.
